Step Up to Nutrition and Health  2009

The food and physical activity choices made everyday affect health and how you feel today and in the future.  Eating right and being physically active are the keys to a healthy lifestyle. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2005 from American Dietetic Association, can lead the way to a healthier you.  Here are the highlights: 

 

Make smart choices from every food group

          *emphasize fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fat-free or low-fat milk

          *include lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs and nuts

          *low in saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, salt and added sugars.

 

Get the most nutrition out of your calories

          *focus on fruits

          *vary your veggies

          *get your calcium-rich foods

          *make half your grains whole

          *go lean with protein

          *know the limits on fats, salt and sugars

 

Find your balance between food and physical activity

          *be physically active for at least 30 minutes most days of the week

*for even greater health benefits and to help control body weight,

be physically active for about 60 minutes a day

          *children and teenagers should be physically active 60 minutes each day
