DEPRESSION AND THE HOLIDAYS

The holiday blues, why do we get them?  There are many factors including:

-Unrealistic expectations of the holiday season

            -Holiday hype and buildup

            -Financial difficulties

-Not being able to be with family and friends

-Increased demands on time—shopping, decorating, parties, end of year deadlines, family reunions, house guests…

When combined, these factors add up and contribute to feelings of tension, stress and depression.  Some people may experience headaches and difficulty sleeping.  Others may try to manage by excessive drinking or overeating.

The holidays come every year, so what can you do?

*Make realistic goals for your time and your money.

*Be mindful of drinking more alcohol.  That can result in feelings of depression.

*Pace yourself.  It is a busy time.

*Make lists to help get organized.

            *Do something for someone else.

            *Enjoy activities that are free.

*Spend time with people who are caring and supportive.

            *Try something new.

            *Save time for yourself.
